Mechanical Repairs for Steering Linkages & Tie Rod Ends

red semi truck on the road
The overall function, strength & durability of your trucks steering components are critical to the safety of heavy vehicle drivers and other road users. The basic function of steering systems has remained relatively unchanged for many years, however materials, assembly & technologies for the pins, rods and bushes have progressed to support higher loads and reduce wear. Hydraulic systems have also been improved to extend the life of these components. Hogan’s Axle Corrections, network with industry leaders & manufacturers to ensure only quality parts & components are used.

Why are Drag links Important?

Drag links have a significant influence on the performance of the vehicles steering system. If you have worn or damaged drag links on your truck this can cause many steering problems, including darting & wandering also known as oversteering or a delay In the steering response, this can be challenging for driver and also dangerous. When replacing draglinks it is important to reset the steering gear plungers, the team at Hogan’s Axle Correction specialise in providing these services, known as resetting the plungers. Drag links play a critical role in the overall function of your vehicles steering system as they provide adjustment allowing the centring of the steering gear. Some vehicles have drag links that allow for steering column optimisation reducing driver effort while improving the vehicle drivability

What is the main difference between Drag Links ends & Tie Rod ends?

The main difference that set these two components apart the angle of rotation, which is the angular equivalence of distance of the tapered pin. Drag links applications often require more travel than the tie rod applications, The photo below shows a tie rod end was fitted to the axle end of the drag link. Tie rods have a limited degrees of ball stud oscillation, mostly around 20 to 25 where the drag link ends have up to 50 degrees.
